Setbacks happen to us all, and life just throws us off without us even realising, whether this be a career setback, mental health struggle, personal setback or other things that haven’t gone the way you had hoped for, this is normal and something we can get through. Setbacks can be necessary for personal growth, learning, progress and reflection, so don’t worry if you have recently been set-back, think of what you have gained from this and how you can reassess certain aspects of your life.
Here are some tips how to restart after a setback:
- Acknowledge your feelings – It’s normal to feel disappointed, sad, angry, frustrated when you have recently felt set-back in your life, however, it is important to acknowledge these feelings without any judgement and to not push them away, feel it all and know that it is okay to not have all the answers right now, just know this will pass.
- Practice Self-Compassion – After a setback, it’s easy to fall into the trap of self-criticism. You might start thinking you’re “not good enough” or “always failing.” But these negative self-talk patterns only hold you back further. Instead, practice self-compassion. Remind yourself that everyone faces challenges, and it’s okay to stumble. A setback doesn’t define who you are; it’s a moment in time, not your identity. Be gentle with yourself as you would be with someone you love.
- Reframe the Setback – A setback doesn’t have to mean failure. Sometimes, it’s a sign that you need to adjust your approach or perspective. Reframe the situation by looking at what you’ve learned from the experience and how you can grow from this. Reframing your setback as a learning experience can help shift your mindset from feeling defeated, to feeling empowered and positive.
- Set Realistic and Positive Goals – Once you’ve started breaking things down, set realistic goals for yourself. These should be goals that motivate you and make you feel more positive and empowered. These should be goals that motivate you but are still achievable in your current circumstances. Setting yourself up for success is essential to finding your confidence and focusing on your mental well-being.
I hope this has helped you in understanding how setbacks doesn’t mean you are a failure and can be necessary for learning experiences, personal growth and give you an understanding where they may need to be some changes in your life. Give these tips a go if you have recently experienced a setback and see how you can go from feeling negative to more positive and empowered.
Lots of love x
