Anxiety Dreams and The Effect They Can Have

I thought I would talk about this topic as I don’t often see much posted about it and it’s something  I have learnt about through therapy, so I thought it might be quite useful for anyone who suffers with their mental health (or doesn’t) and has also experienced this before.

Everybody dreams, we vary between having good dreams and some awful dreams, it’s just part of us and a normal thing that happens when we are asleep. However, as somebody who suffers from anxiety, whenever I have been constantly worrying about something throughout the day and for a longer period, I start to dream about this situation in different forms, this then causes me a lot of anxiety when I wake.

Now, if you are one of those people I just wanted to share something that I learnt in therapy about this and since then this has no longer affected me. So when we dream of the things we worry about this is because it has been on our mind a lot and taken up a lot of the space in there, so when we are asleep, our brain essentially dreams about these worries to try and get rid of them, or ‘throw them away’, this is how it has been described to me in therapy.

Sometimes, when we wake from these dreams we can worry more about the situation that has already been taking up a lot of energy, if this is something you experience, remember that this doesn’t make the worry ‘true’ or like it’s going to happen, it is just your brain’s way of coping with something that has been on your mind in your waking life, its nothing to feel worse about.

I hope this makes sense and is helpful in some way, I experience this from time to time and always remember this reminder I learnt in therapy, so I thought this might be useful for anybody who suffers from this.

Please remember this is what I have learnt in therapy, and these are the things that have helped me, so I am sharing these with you in the hope they may be able to help you too and I hope you find them as useful as I have.

Lots of love x
